Castro, de 20 años, de Rockwall, Texas, comenzó con fuerza en la séptima temporada del programa pero perdió auge en las últimas semanas. Sus actuaciones fueron débiles y en la edición del martes olvidó parte de la letra de la canción de Bob Dylan "Mr. Tambourine Man".
Cowell pronosticó su partida: "Jason, yo haría mis maletas", le advirtió el juez.
Castro tomó la noticia con calma, manteniendo su sonrisa indeleble aun tras conocer los resultados.
Minutos antes le había dicho al presentador Ryan Seacrest: "Creo que se me está haciendo muy difícil. Creo que mi inexperiencia se está notando".
Castro dijo que esta semana trató de seleccionar canciones que sabía - "Mr. Tambourine Man" y "I Shot the Sheriff" de Bob Marley - y sin embargo "lo eché a perder".
Tras interpretar el clásico de Marley, Cowell le dijo menos que impresionado: "¡No entiendo en qué estás pensando!"
Castro respondió: "¡Estoy pensando en Bob Marley!"
El programa incluyó actuaciones de la banda Maroon 5 y el ex concursante Bo Bice.
