"Lo cierto es que somos una sociedad que está anegada en racismo'', dijo Martin Jacques en el diario The Guardian, en una de numerosas columnas que fustigaron tanto a Goody como a los productores del programa.
Los televidentes enviaron 40.000 quejas al regulador televisivo británico sobre la agresión contra Shetty, una estrella del cine en India. El incidente desató fuertes críticas además en Gran Bretaña, donde manifestantes quemaron efigies de los productores del programa.
Luego, a mediados de 2008, Goody se enteró que sufría de cáncer cervical. A partir de ese momento, todos olvidaron su personalidad incómoda y la consideraron una mártir.
El avance de su enfermedad, día a día, fue seguido en los tabloides y los noticiarios de televisión. Fue sometida a intervenciones quirúrgicas y a quimioterapia a la vista del público.
Murió el domingo, mientras dormía. El primer ministro Brown, que fue tan duro contra ella durante su visita a la India, dijo que había sido "una mujer valiente, tanto en la vida como en la muerte''.
