La estresante idea nace de otros momentos clásicos de las cintas. Según Luis: "Hemos hecho una película con momentos que nos gusta ver en el cine. A ambos nos gusta la escena del triturador de basura en 'La guerra de las galaxias' o aquella de 'Indiana Jones en el Templo de la Perdición' donde su habitación disminuye, y pensamos que una película entera puede sostenerse ahí dentro. Y los enigmas matemáticos se ven raras veces en las películas, por lo menos desde nuestro punto de vista..."
Rodrigo añade que "además, la cinta tiene un aire de identificar al asesino, al estilo de Agatha Christie o con personajes encerrados como en 'Rope' de Alfred Hitchcock, 'Sleuth' de Laurence Olivier y Michael Caine o '12 Angry Men'... Queríamos que resultara teatral. Esa cosa de tener muchos actores en un mismo set es muy atractivo".
Pero justamente ése fue su gran obstáculo. ¿Cómo filmar a cuatro personajes dentro de una habitación de 50 metros cuadrados que poco a poco se va achicando? Luis nos confesó: "El rodaje fue horrible, deseamos la muerte cada mañana. Vendimos la película como algo muy fácil de hacer: algo que transcurre en un solo decorado, y eso se volvió en nuestra contra. Construimos una habitación de 50 metros cuadrados con cuatro paredes que van disminuyendo, haciendo el cuadrado central cada vez más pequeño. No hubo tiempo para probar el mecanismo. Pasaron 24 semanas entre el inicio del rodaje y el estreno, así que comenzamos a rodar muy rápido, y de repente se atrancaba el mecanismo o se rompía una lámpara. Al principio, a los 50 metros, puedes rodar tranquilamente, pero al terminar con 4 metros cuadrados y estás viendo a cuatro actores apretados y 16 personas del equipo técnico con cámaras y focos, fue horrible. El oxígeno era un bien escaso..."

Y para el enigmático papel de Fermat, el hombre que los ha llevado a esa letal habitación, contrataron a Federico Luppi ('Cronos', 'Elsa y Fred', 'El laberinto del Fauno'). Luis comenta que "fue buena noticia que entre dos proyectos, Federico Luppi abría un hueco para colaborar con nosotros y nos venía muy bien porque el personaje de Fermat es muy importante desde el guión, y por eso, Fermat debía hacer un actor de peso. Fue un gran honor que aceptara trabajar con nosotros".
Después de conseguir un gran éxito en España, ahora 'La habitación de Fermat' se estrena en el resto del mundo. Mientras tanto, Sopeña y Piedrahita preparan ya su segunda película, que quieren mantener bajo el mismo tono. "Estará relacionado con un robo", informa Rodrigo. "Es una peli de un atraco, o 'heist', como le dicen. Queremos mantener la misma línea de pocos personajes, pocas localizaciones y un guión basado en el ingenio". "La marca de la casa", termina Luis.
