"Slumdog Millionaire", un conmovedor y crudo relato sobre un adolescente huérfano de los bajos barrios de Mumbai que sale de la pobreza al triunfar en una versión del concurso televisivo "¿Quién quiere ser millonario?", competía en 10 apartados.
El multipremiado éxito de taquilla, que estuvo a punto de salir directamente en DVD, obtuvo además los reconocimientos al mejor guión adaptado, cinematografía, mezcla de sonido, partitura original, canción original y edición.
Ledger, en tanto, conquistó la misma categoría masculina y pasó a ser apenas el segundo actor en ganar la estatuilla de manera póstuma, por su oscura versión del Guasón en la cinta de Batman "The Dark Knight".
El actor australiano falleció hace 13 meses por una sobredosis accidental de fármacos con receta, el mismo día que se anunciaron los nominados el año pasado. Su Oscar lo une a Peter Finch, quien tras morir ganó el premio al mejor actor en 1976, por "Network".
Los padres y hermanas de Ledger aceptaron el honor en nombre de su hija Matilda.
"¿Se ha desmayado alguien aquí alguna vez? Porque creo que seré la primera", fueron las primeras palabras de Cruz, quien lució evidentemente abrumada al recibir su estatuilla, la primera de la noche.

Esta es la quinta ocasión que un actor o actriz de reparto gana un Oscar por un filme de Allen. Cruz se une así a Dianne Wiest, ganadora por "Hannah and Her Sisters" y "Bullets Over Broadway"; Michael Caine por "Hannah and Her Sisters"; y Mira Sorvino por "Mighty Aphrodite".
Cruz recibió su Oscar de cinco ganadoras previas de la misma categoría: Tilda Swinton, Eva Marie Saint, Anjelica Huston, Whoopi Goldberg y Goldie Hawn.
Fue un gran cambio al formato en que los ganadores del año previo entregaban la estatuilla a la flamante ganadora del sexo opuesto. De haberse mantenido la tradición, Cruz hubiese podido recibir su galardón de manos de Bardem, quien se encontraba en Barcelona rodando "Biutiful" de Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Los organizadores habían anunciado grandes ajustes pero se mantuvieron mudos en torno a los detalles en busca de un impulso a sus índices de audiencia, que el año pasado alcanzaron su mínimo.
La más nominada de la velada, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", obtuvo tres estatuillas, a efectos visuales, dirección de arte y maquillaje. Por este último premio competía el mexico-estadounidense Mike Elizalde, por su trabajo en la cinta de Guillermo del Toro "Hellboy II".
Entre otros ganadores, "WALL-E" se impuso como mejor largometraje animado, "Milk" también obtuvo el premio al mejor guión original y "The Dark Knight" el de edición de sonido. La japonesa "Departures" se llevó el honor a la mejor cinta de lengua extranjera.
El anfitrión de la velada, el actor australiano Hugh Jackman, se robó el show al abrir con un número musical en el que saludó a los nominados, y por el que recibió una ovación de pie de sus pares.
La 81a entrega de los premios de la Academia se transmitía en vivo desde el Teatro Kodak de Los Angeles.
