En el 2000 la Academia lo postuló al premio al mejor actor por su trabajo en "Antes que anochezca", de Julian Schnabel, en la que encarnó al poeta y novelista cubano Reinaldo Arenas. Ese año el Oscar fue para Russell Crowe por "Gladiador".
Shakira, cuyo tema "La despedida" de "El amor en los tiempos del cólera" había sido preseleccionado en la categoría de mejor canción para una película, no quedó entre las cinco nominadas: "Falling Slowly" de "Once"; "Happy Working Song", "So Close" y "That's How You Know", las tres de "Enchanted"; y "Raise It Up" de "August Rush".
Las demás candidatas a mejor película son "Atonement", "Juno" y "Michael Clayton".
