El Departamento de Salud Pública de California citó al Centro Médico Cedars-Sinai y otros 10 hospitales el jueves por violaciones que ocasionaron o "pudieron haber ocasionado lesiones graves o la muerte de pacientes".

El vocero del Cedars, Richard Elbaum, dijo que el hospital ha cooperado con los investigadores estatales y que tiene intención de pagar la multa.

La multa al Cedars-Sinai llega meses después que el estado emitió un reporte de 20 páginas en el que responsabilizó al hospital por darle a los bebés prematuros de Quaid y otro menor no identificado 1.000 veces la dosis requerida de heparina en noviembre.

Los tres bebés se recuperaron, pero dos necesitaron de un medicamento adicional para revertir los efectos del anticoagulante.

Desde entonces el hospital se disculpó con los familiares de los pacientes y dijo haber tomado medidas para entrenar mejor a su personal y revisar todas las políticas y procedimientos que involucran fármacos de alto riesgo.

El error evitable occurrió luego que un dependiente de farmacia almacenó dosis elevadas de heparina en el lugar equivocado y una enfermera que administró la droga a los bebés no verificó la cantidad.

Tras el incidente, Quaid y su esposa, Kimberly, demandaron a la fabricante de heparina Baxter Healthcare Corp., acusando a la compañía de negligencia por empacar distintas dosis del producto en viales similares.
